I'm very excited about the whole OpenMeta framework and new apps being released using this.

In a nutshell: OpenMeta is tagging framework based on OS X Spotlight.

Check out Tags to see how tagging should work in OS X, incl. tagging of Mail, iPhoto, URLs, files etc...
There's also a free, less slick app called Tagit.

But what's really great is that some really good apps will support OpenMeta soon, like Yep, Deep and Leap. Also, Default Folder X will soon support savings tags directly in the Save dialog.

Anyone else who thinks that this is good stuff ?

Awesome, TETENAL

To me, this is a mere theoretical discussion.

I have tried to use Spotlight comments as tags, and it sucks. The lack of support in Mail, iPhoto etc just makes it very rough.

Yes, there is always a danger that Apple does something stupid, because they don't officially support it.
However, the whole idea behind OpenMeta is clever and the open source framework allows any app to support it for free. If more and more people and apps use it, Apple is either going to:

a) Implement it as well
b) Come up with their own tag support (for which there will be 3rd party conversion apps)

At any rate, we need good tag support, and OpenMeta brings the force to push this on Apple's agenda.
