I know on the PC that with Adobe Captivate that you can open a powerpoint file and compress it using adobe captivate. Is there a similar software package on the MAC that allows for the compression of powerpoint files in much the same way that captivate does

I use Captivate all the time (unfortunately) and I've never used it in such a way. Captivate is a program mostly for creating software demonstrations by taking a series of screen captures and animating the cursor. I don't know of a Powerpoint compression feature. Why don't you just zip up the file using Stuffit or something else?

There are a variety of screencasting options for Mac, notably ScreenFlow.
