my friend's kid is on facebook all day, and she's not happy about it. is there a way to control her daughter's time on the site? it's a g4 powerbook, 10.5.6, safari. she's the only user on that mac, so an admin...
any app? or??? thanx!

Create another admin account and control the kid's account using Parental Controls. You can't control time on facebook specifically, just computer usage time in general, but children should spend some time in real life, so why not.
Alternatively, if her router allows it, she could block facebook in her router. I have a netgear router and you can easily block sites using a time schedule from within its web configuration page.

There's no solution. You can block Facebook, but the kid will be able to get around extremely easily using a proxy.
We tried doing stuff like this when I worked for a school district. The only answer was an industrial strength filter on our network with an automatically updating proxy list, and even then...
Best solutions: Actual parenting and unplugging the internet.

What about a cron job to execute at a certain time of the day? It could run to modify the hosts table to add an entry where facebook.com goes to localhost. Then it runs later to remove that line.
Seems cumbersome but might work. Someone more savvy on this will hopefully comment.

Could work, but is only for the savvy user.
I think ContentBarrier supports allowing specific web sites only at specific times of the day.

Seconded for removing the kid's Internet privileges. If she needs Internet access for homework, then she can connect only when in a supervised area of the house.
The Airport Express can be configured for timed MAC address access, so the kid can be granted time-limited Internet access.

If she's got admin-level access, won't she just be able to turn off ContentBarrier?

can i convert an admin to a standard account? (and not lose anything?) or we could change her password, so only her mom knows it...
