Your question about the best apps is very vague, what do you want to do? This MacNN thread should be a good start.

Do you just want to delete your email messages and leave your mailbox folder structure or do you want to delete everything? You always could multiselect in Mac apps just like in Windows apps (e.g. click on first thing then hold shift and click on end of range then delete, or use control-clicks to select noncontiguous emails...)

Actually, its command-click, not control-click, for non-contiguous items on a Mac. Control-click will open the context-sensitive menu (i.e. right-click menu).

Yup...sorry to post incorrect info...I'm in BootCamp so I can play CounterStrike in between College math chapters (for sanity).

I use Thunderbird for reading email and newsgroups. I really like it. I use Firefox for most of my browsing. It is much more configurable than Safari.
For extracting archives there are Zipeg and The Unarchiver. Compactor can be used to make new archives.
I am not sure what other kinds of applications you are looking for.

I agree about what you said about Firefox. It is a great, flexible, user-friendly program.

However, you don't need any of these because it is built into the OS already. I assume that the software Curiosity posted about gives you more options than what is available from the OS, but they aren't necessary if you don't need more options.

To extract an archive, just double click it and it will un-pack itself. To create .zip archives, select your items, right click and choose Create Archive (in 10.4) or Compress n items (in 10.5, where n is the number of items) from the contextual menu.

The built-in compression utility does not handle password-protected zip files, though. I have Unarchiver installed for that.

I used to use Thunderbird but once the beta of Postbox was released, I switched over to that.

What exactly is it... just an app, or an app that requires their service, or what?
I can't find any fees enumerated, and decoding the 'Terms Of Use' page is difficult.

Can you summarize what "Postbox" is, and what it costs?

Postbox is an email client, just like Thunderbird, Mail, etc. It's a free app as well, which is cross-platform like Thunderbird.

And no, I'm affiliated with them.

It does look nice... and the engineers appear to be mostly ex-Mozilla.

Finally found one item about the cost factor on the FAQ page:
How much will Postbox cost?
Postbox is currently in the early BETA stage of development and pricing has not yet been announced.
Figures... it's just too pretty and feature-rich to be free.
[the betas will probably expire on some preset date.]

True, but in one video I saw on the web (can't remember the link offhand), the developers claimed it would stay free. We'll see, though.
