I have used iChat with other Mac users but I want to use a similar video chat app to connect with PC's in the UK and abroad. I am sure relatives abroad have Messenger but can AdiumX connect with Messenger? Are AdiumX and MS Messenger for Mac similar in what they promise, and do they work ok on a Mac? Which one is the best? I don't want use Skype!

Adium is like the Tower of Babel when it comes to messaging apps… it can speak to everybody. If I recall right it is getting videochat with its next version 2.
The next Microsoft Messenger for Mac 8 which has been leaked finally brings video conference to the Mac side… You may try Yahoo Messenger which is compatible with the MSN network and besides video which I don't do so I can't say, works quite well.

I have now used TokBox for a trial and it seems to be ideal for what I want. It is very simple and effective. But can anyone tell me if I am able to receive incoming calls from other TokBox users if I am online but NOT logged into TokBox. In other words will it ring if I am connected (by router) but not connected to any search engine or website?

Edit:
Found it

Just click the one on the right.
