Is there such a thing as this? This would be a program that acted as an airtunes server on the network. So computers on the network would see the airtunes in their itunes apps as a destination to play audio through, but when you chose that server, it would just play the music through the speakers of the machine running the airtunes server. It's kind of a niche need but it would be perfect for people that have nice speakers hooked up to macs being used as media servers.
Technically I could get another airport express and plug it's audio output into my mini's input. But I don't want to buy a whole other device for it, PLUS the input is going to be playing through the audio output from my TV already.

Given the fact airport express goes for 99 dollars, apple has no such software and I doubt there's any market for a third party to develop such a product.

Well I know apple doesn't make any but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some 3rd party projects doing SOMETHING with the airtunes system.

Maybe someone does but I kind of doubt it since the market for such a product is rather small and apple has a device that basically does what you're asking. I don't see anyone making any money on this type of product and I'm not sure there's sufficient motivation for someone to try to write an open source product.
just my $.02

Is this what your looking for?

With Airfoil you can send audio from any app via airtunes to remote speakers and they bundle their airfoil Speakers app which let you play audio through the speakers of any Mac on the network.

Nope, that's in fact the exact OPPOSITE of what he's looking for.

Ok, just got a bit confused when you said you may buy a second Airport express so that you can stream the audio in to your MacMini from another Mac (media server). This is the exact function that airfoil speaker achieves. Once you have it installed you have a list of available devices to play audio through, like other macs and airtunes speakers
I have an iMac that is my media server with a massive hard drive. Airfoil speakers installed and i share my itunes library over the local network. From my Macbook I can browse audio files on the imac and play the audio through any speaker or macs on the local network.
Is this still the exact opposite of what you want to achieve?

Wrong. Read the second part of the sentence. Airfoil now comes with an app (Airfoil Speakers) that does what he wants. Airfoil now provides both solutions.

Oh whoops.
Missed that.
The Airfoil Speakers app is a fairly recent addition? I don't recall having seen it the times I've tried Airfoil.

Yes - I think it was new in the last major release - a few months ago if memory serves.

Almost but not quiet.
Apparently AirFoil Speakers is a remote only for AirFoil. Not for standard airtunes via itunes. I suspect it's probably as close to a solution as I'm going to find though.

The Airfoil system will work. I was looking for a more free, and simpler solution. But I guess I'm stuck with Airfoil, although I do have some time before this happens.
