I need to connect to a windows XP machine using Apple Remote Desktop, however the XP box doesn't have a static ip so i can't add it that way.

The XP machine is running RealVNC server. My workmates who all use windows use the client and they only have to enter the computer name to find it. ARD doesn't seem to let me do this.

Since I am the only one who uses my own computer I am not allowed to be on the local domain with it (though I can connect to shared drives and such since I do have an active directory account so my pass for those drives work.)

I do have XP running under VMware so I can install the RealVNC viewer but i'd rather use ARD

Why not use LogMeIn ?

You will have no issues with port forwarding, special clients etc.

You could also try Microsoft's free Remote Desktop Connection (for Mac download; built in to XP).

its not an issue of port forwarding since i can go to the machine in question get its current ip and I can log in just fine with ip. i can even find it on the ARD scanner though it doesn't give the computer name just the ip and but i dont know which it is out of the 50 that it finds on the subnet

You could also try Microsoft's free Remote Desktop Connection (for Mac download; built in to XP).
I will try that,

Try Cord (http://cord.sourceforge.net/) instead of Remote Desktop Connection. Both use the Windows Remote Desktop Protocol, which is more responsive than VNC and don't require any additional software on the target computer (though, the computer does need to be running Windows XP Pro, I believe). I just find the CoRD offers more features (like, scaling the resolution of the target computer to fit my MacBook's screen).

just tried the beta for CoRD. Amazing stuff, i was so annoyed of always using the Microsoft version to manage my windows machines at work. but this really makes a breeze. thanks a lot!

My comment only applied to remote connections from the WAN, not LAN.

At any rate, with LogMeIn, you can give unique names to your computers. No need to know their IPs. In fact, it works even if you use DHCP, and the IPs are changing.

Well let me ask this.

Finder can see all the NetBios/DNS names listed servers/computers are all in the sidebar of the finder window under shared. But for some reason ARD can't when using its scanner. is there a reason for this?

Also though think people understand. This is all happening on a LAN not WAN I will never be connecting from outside the office. I cant use the Microsoft RD because they are not using XPs built in screen sharing but RealVNC instead.

Because I am on a Mac and our IT guys dont use them they are not willing to spend the time to help me. THey only say I must have some sort of DNS issue.

PS thanks for the suggestions

Have you tried a different VNC client? Apple's client is severely limited and only allows a very certain set of configuration options. You might try the Vine VNC viewer or something else, and see if that works.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...
