I'm trying to figure out a less manual / more automated way to do the following.

1. I have an iTunes library on an external drive that holds Apple Lossless files ripped from my CD's.
2. I have a second library on my MacBook Pro's hard drive, currently empty.

I want to import files to the MacBook Pro from the external drive but convert them down to 128 kbps AAC while doing so. I want only the 128 kbps files on the notebook hard drive.

I can do this manually by entering the first library, converting the files, and then manually selecting and moving them, but I'm looking for a way to streamline this. It looks like Automator might be able to do this, but I'm not sure I've got all the needed actions, and I've never done an Automator workflow. But I'm willing to learn, though I sure could use some guidance. Thanks for any suggestions.

Chris.

Do the import settings in iTunes only apply when ripping from a CD and not dragging and dropping into the Music library? Because if the import settings could be applied when dragging or dropping or doing Add to Library, you'd be done.

Drag and drop doesn't convert the files, so that's not doing it for me. Part of my issue, of course, is preserving room on the MacBook Pro's hard drive, plus it gets to how I want things to sync to my iPhone.

There is a free program called Switch. You can find it on Apple's Website. (Don't know exact URL)!

Just drag in the files, tell the program what to convert them to, and press GO (or something like that)! Soon, you will have converted audio files!

Chris,

Thanks! Switch didn't exactly do it for me as I wanted to end up in AAC, but that put me onto another free one named Max that does. Problem solved! :-)

Are you trying to carry over playcounts, ratings, etc, or are you just trying to move the files? If the latter, you can do everything from within the iTunes library on your laptop hard drive. Make sure you have the settings checked to "keep iTunes folder organized" and "copy to iTunes folder when adding to library". Drag the Apple Lossless files to iTunes while holding the OPTION key (so that they aren't copied to your laptop drive). Make sure your iTunes import settings are set up to AAC. Once the Apple Lossless files are in iTunes, just select all and, under the "Advanced" menu, select "Create AAC version." iTunes will convert all of the files and, in the process of adding them to the Library, it will save them in the iTunes Music Folder on the laptop, not the external drive. Then create a Smart Playlist to find all of the Apple Lossless files, and remove them from the library.
