I'm looking to learn French. What are the best Mac apps out there for an adult to learn a foreign language?

How much French do you know? Do you have enough French to join a conversation group?
Most libraries have language learning materials that you can check out, you might have to go to the catalog and have them brought in on hold from another library. That's one way to try various materials...

I can count to three, say hello, goodbye, and thank you. I've probably lost a bit that I picked up from Bugs Bunny cartoons as a child.

Seconded. It works well but you pay a premium for it. Kind of like the Mac.

I was looking at similar things recently.
That rosetta stone thing it cool, I've tried it and it does have a way of sticking the words right into your brain. It works almost like a puzzle - you figure out what they are trying to say and gradually you get it right. The down side is that it works best as a full course to become fluent. If you want to quickly learn some phrases for travel you are better off with something else. You can't download anything but they will send you a free demo.
iTunes store has several podcasts for free with daily and weekly lessons, etc
this site seems to have lots of good links:
http://freelanguage.org
this is a social website, it's free - they have tutorials you work through, also chat and groups to interact live. haven't really used it but it looked cool

The US government created several courses that are in the public domain. they are a little dated but trained diplomats for decades. (dated as in "say buddy, where's the hat store?")

Have fun

You may want to check out a local library...our library has French Rosetta Stone you can try out or just do it for a month at a time (and then continue to recheck it out).
