Whilst on holiday I recorded some dawn chorus (birds) on my stills camera (movie mode)

Looking around for a conversion (extraction) of (Video) .mov to (Audio) .mp3 or similar, including searching here, the initial best solution I found was already on my iMac.

It wasn't iTunes, I tried after importing .mov's, but the convert to MP3 choice was greyed out.

it was Toast 10.

Open Convert window, select Audio Files, drag .mov files to window, press RED button, you then get the various audio output options.

Simple.

File size reduced by ≈ 8x (AIFF or WAV) (30mb down to 4mb)

I then discovered Switch, as recommended by Apple

http://www.nch.com.au/switch/

Converted .mov to .mp3 very quickly, and reduced file size ≈ 75x !! (MP3) (30mb down to 400kb)

Having discovered Switch, i will now record more atmos audio on my stills camera, using movie function I can record more than few seconds of audio description tied to jpg.

I use QTAmateur for all my multimedia conversions.

Just tried that, no MP3 option as far as I can see.
Plus you have to add the file extension (ie .aiff) etc to the file name.

you can also use quicktime. open the file in QT, go to Properties. delete the video portion. save as an aiff. open that in itunes, convert to mp3...
