I'm a Mac Tech for a College and though the new school year is a few months away I'm putting together a list of recommended mac apps (all free) for students. Could be for anyone really but each year, especially Sept. when we have lots of new students I get asked a lot by students to recommenced hardware, software etc. Aside from the standard software they are required to have which is usually Adobe products I'm looking to put a list of free software apps together and though I have a few already in my list here I was looking to see what other hear have to suggest.
Essential Mac Software For Students

iChm, the best CHM reader I have found for the Mac.
Evernote, great note taking software.
While this comes to personal preference, I like MPlayer OSX Extended way more than VLC Player.
NetNewsWire, superb RSS reader for those who don't like to have Safari or Mail bloated with RSS feeds.
You want some backup software, besides Time Machine, iBackup and CCC are worth a look. SuperDuper! I like more but it's not free.
Paparazzi may be a good substitute for save as pdf/webfile when you need to print any website.

If you want cloning for backups there's no need for third-party/commercial solutions. It's already built in to the OS for free.
/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility > Restore.
Select erase backup destination to get a bootable clone in block-copy mode (fast!).

And since you're talking about apps for students...
LaTeX has always been free. TeXShop is an excellent TeX editor for OS X and it's free too.

Not incremental, though.
(Oh, and it's "erase destination", not "erase backup" - quick slip but fairly crucial distinction. )

RarMachine is on your list but it's not free ($8). Besides, most people don't really need to rar compress, just decompress. UnRarX works great for that.
