I have DVDs from both Regions 1 and 2 that I want to watch on my Macbook Unibody. Is there a way to make my computer accept both regions or to switch between regions? If I don't want to carry DVDs with me, what software do you recommend for copying these commercial disks to my HD to watch later?

I think VLC player ignores region coding, so you may want to give it a try.

Then you could also rip (extract from DVD disc to your Mac hard disk) the movies with RipIt.

If you have vlc installed, handbrake will rip the DVD as a compact yet high-quality mp4. This means you don't have to worry about region encoding or carrying DVDs around.

However, for playing the occasional DVD, vlc works great and ignores region encodings.
