Hi all -

I got a used G4 PowerBook with a clean install of Leopard. The only user was "admin" with no password.

I transfered all my Firefox bookmarks (from the Profiles folder) from my other laptop (same type and OS as above) via a USB memory stick. I followed the same path to copy them to the new laptop as they existed in the old laptop. However, upon running up Firefox, it did not recognize the bookmarks.

Is there a way to 'import' them, or tell Firefox that they exist? Is there something about the Profiles folder that is specific to a user-computer combination that won't transfer to a new user-computer?

Another thing, I later created "dragonwerx" login, where I am now. My Firefox downloads all wind up in the "admin" user's account. I know this may be a System post, so please feel free to reply to my message in the OS forum.

thanks for all your help,
Kelley Dragon

Open Firefox's preferences and change the download path to your Desktop or your Downloads folder. It should download there now.

For bookmarks - in your Firefox profile folder, there is a bookmarks.html file. Replace it with the one you want. Your firefox profile is in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/[your current profile]

You can also try this now or remember it for future reference, the easiest way to copy Firefox bookmarks from one computer to another is to go to "organize bookmarks" in the menu and then find the "export html" feature in the sub-menus.

Copy that file over to the new computer and then use the "import html" feature which should be right next to the export html feature. With this import feature you can import any bookmarks from any other browser that can export their bookmarks as an html file format.

It's great when you use more than one internet browser. It's also a nice way to backup your bookmarks to an external hard drive in case your main hard drive dies. I don't want to find all those websites again so backing up my bookmarks is important to me.

Thanks for the help! I tried copying the bookmarks.html file, but I didn't see any result. (at least, no new bookmarks showed up in Firefox) However, exporting/importing worked.

best regards,
Kelley

I have found that the easiest way to transfer profile contents to a new computer (or a new hard drive in the same computer) is to allow Firefox to make a new profile and then copy the contents of the old profile into the new one.
