My mother has a 15" Powerbook G4 Dual Layer running 10.5.7. Recently a problem developed with Mail whereby it freezes then quits whenever my mother tries to open an email with a JPEG attachment. There's no issue with other attachments, just JPEG's. I know there's no problem with the emails or the JPEG attachments because I can forward the emails to my Mac and open them fine.
Now there was a period of three months where the Powerbook couldn't be used as the original adapter broke and it took a while to get a replacement. I'm wondering if the fact the Powerbook was unused for such a long period, and obviously without power, could've caused Mail to go weird?
Does anyone know what could be causing this? We've already tried going through Mail's preferences and changing some of the options, but this didn't fix the issue.

Try using Mail in a different user account to see if the problem persists. If it does, there may be something wrong with Mail itself, possibly requiring re-installation. If it doesn't, then there is something wrong with your Mom's Mail settings or preference files.

All of that might not solve the problem. I have had several mails which crashed Apple Mail repeatedly, no matter what you did to the program or the system. Those mails had typically embedded objects, like many or larger pictures.
All of them could be opened flawlessly even with an OS9 Outlook Express running in Classic. I figure there are some damn bugs in the Apple rendering engine.
