I downloaded an HD - 720P NTSC QuickTime file but only the audio plays (no video). I received a message that I may need an additional component from this page: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resou...omponents.html

How in the world do you figure out which component to choose? Does anyone have an educated suggestion? Thanks!

Do you have perian installed?

Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime components

That and the free Flip4Mac codec at Telestream Products - Overview should have you covered for pretty much everything you'll find out there.

Play the rest with VLC ( www.videolan.org ).

Except for the fact that your iMac G5 is probably gonna choke on the 720p video - you'll probably need a dual-processor G5 Power Mac or any Intel for that.

If that won't work, try the Xiph component as well. It adds the Theora codec, which is not included in any of the above codec packs. With those three packs, you're only missing Indeo 4 and 5 of formats that I have ever run in to. They play in VLC for x86 - for PPC you can play them in Quicktime inside Classic.

More generally, you can find info on the codec used - a 4 letter code - inside Quicktime's info window even if you don't have the codec. Usually it works to just google that 4 letter code.

FWIW, my iMac G5 plays 720p H.264 well enough. 1080p is beyond it, though.

I like MPlayer OSX Extended more, but besides such a subjectivity, it can play some REAL media files VLC can't.
