Mail not seeing iPhoto pics

i never noticed this before; on a macbook (10.5.7), and with iphoto 8.0.4.

i went to attach some photos from my library to an email (ie attach>media>iphotos) and every name comes up (ie img.4031) but instead of seeing my pictures, every image is a grey circle with a white exclamation point.

anyone know what this means, and...how to fix it?

Do the photos appear OK in iPhoto? Try holding command and option as you open iPhoto to rebuild the photo thumbnails.
