I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing, but i am trying to find a decent alternative to soulseek for mac, or at least a good torrents search engine that your can download rare and alternative music from and not just mainstream stuff, as btjunkie or pirates bay never seem to come up with the things i want. i heard somewhere that there are some really good invite only torrents sites?
I have tried getting nicotene and solorseek, soulseekx but they dont seem to open my mac.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

You will not find any advice on this board helping you to pirate music. However, there's a good chance that questions about BT clients for the Mac might just be answered.

Check out Last.fm for a great community-rated place for streaming music. Type in an artist you want to listen to and it will play other artists that have a similar style. Then go to iTunes and buy it.

Last.fm has a Mac application so you don't need to leave your web browser open...plus you can scrobble.
