I just bought a Macbook Pro and will need to transfer the files (especially music) from the external HD that my old iMac was running on until it finally died a few weeks ago.

Since the internal HD died six months ago, I've been running the old iMac on an external HD. But now the machine won't boot for more than five minutes without experiencing kernel panic. So I decided to take it off life support and let it go. But because it's dead, I can't just plug it together with the new Mac, turn them on and move files over. I'm going to need to just plug the external HD into the new machine and drag the files over from there. But will I be blocked from using the music and movie files on the new machine because of digital rights issues?

Could use some advice on how to do this quickly and easily. Thanks in advance.

You can authorize five computers to play your DRM restricted files.. Assuming you've not hit your limit, simply authorize your Macbook Pro.

For future reference, even if the computer only runs a few minutes, you should take the time to de-authorize a computer that you won't use any more.

Also, in case the music is NOT Apple DRMed AAC, you should have no issues at all just copying those files over and use it.

I took your advice and deauthorized the old machine (I got it booted up just long enough to get that done before it kernel panicked again. But now how do I get the files from the old external harddrive onto my new Macbook (which just arrived today!!!!)? It appears that I don't even have the right firewire cable (my old Mac was pretty old and the connector appears to be different).

If your external hard drive has a USB connection then that would be the easier way to go without having to buy anything. It should have come with a USB cable if it supports USB. If it only has a firewire connection then you need to get a firewire 400 to firewire 800 adapter.

The new MacBooks use firewire 800 now.

I went ahead with USB. It was a little slow, but did okay. Thanks for the advice.
