iTunes: any way to change the default configuration?

Most of my music collection is classical, and like all classical fans, I've had to do some work-arounds to get iTunes to play nice with the way classical music is organized. Right now, I'm putting the composer's name in the "artist" tag, which works OK, but creates some problems.
There's a perfectly good "composer" tag that is supported by the iPod and can be displayed in the user-configurable columns in the lower half of the iTunes text browser display. However, to be really useful, I have to be able to set one of the three field at the top of the browser to the composer tag, since they drive all the quick, easy selection of specific groups of albums (or in my case complete classical works.)
These three fields seem to be hard-wired to display only "genre," "artist" and "album." I would like change the "artist" box to show "composer" instead. Does anybody know a way to do this, either through a hard-to-find prefs setting or a hack?

Which iPod? On my phone, under "more" is the option to sort by "Composers".

I believe all the iPod models can sort by composer.
My problem is that I can't select by composer in the iTunes browser on my Mac, which is pretty much the price of admission on using that tag to organize my music.

This might sound crazy, but I don't think there is a way to do what you want.. Why not use "Artist" as "Composer"? Swap the two fields. Even though it would still say "artist" at the top of the window, it would be composers.
You could still use "composer" in the listings at the bottom, smart playlists, etc.

You can reorder the columns in iTunes, you know. Just click on the column's title and drag it to where you want it. Now you can have the Composer column visible, and you can use it to sort by composer. Of course you also have to use the View menu and click on the "Composer" checkbox to see that column...
Or am I missing something here?

You're missing that he wants to use the "Browser" (⌘B). That one indeed can not have a Composer column afaik.
In addition to using list view like ghporter suggested, you could also use the grid view. It has a button to sort by composer.

You can also type the composer name in the search box and only those songs will show up.

That sucks, too, because then you have to use the album name to designate the actual artist. e.g. Ormandy, Solti, Furtwängler, Bernstein, etc. plus the orchestra, which in turn makes album titles impossibly long and useless.

A lot of people don't even know that it exists, so I'm sadly not surprised by the comments in the thread.

The reason I don't use the browser (yes I'd missed that part) is that it's so limited. You get three columns that Apple decided you want, not what you really want. Genre, Artist and Album just do not give enough flexibility to go through even a modest library efficiently, and after playing with it for a while, I gave up on Browser and have used the VERY flexible regular display columns instead.
