My email account is imap. In the event the server screws up my email at some point, I want to be sure I have it backed up. Two questions:
1. Is there a way to automatically back up email from my imap account on Mail to "on my mac"?
2. If I use Time Capsule to back up my entire system will it also back up email that is only in my imap account and not "on my mac" - so that if one day the server just disappeared I would still have all my email from the last sync with Time Capsule.
Thanks for any input.

Good question. I'm not too sure about the answer myself, although I suspect it will only backup email stored "On My Mac."

The option to keep copies of messages for offline viewing, including attachments, which is found in the advanced account settings of Mail tells the program to keep local copies of everything in the library of your home folder.
The local copies are here: HomeFolder->Library->Mail->IMAP-AccountName
These can be backed up easily using whatever backup method you'd like.

I create local folders and every month or so will copy messages to it. If the server-side ever kicks the bucket, I can just copy back my stuff. Time Machine also backs up my user account, so that takes care of a backup for the local messages.

Guess that would explain why I can read my imap email when I'm offline.
Thanks for the clear explanation!

Doesn't time machine already back up the local copy in your home folder, as gradient described?

It would, but I don't use Mail and I don't trust it for anything IMAP-related, local or no.
