One of the most annoying things on my old PPC Mac was the amount of CPU required to display Flash ads on web pages. When I got my Intel Mac I was so excited that this problem had been fixed, but recently it's back. Displaying a sliver of a Flash ad uses 110% CPU (dual core). Anyone else seeing something similar?

The problem was never fixed, Flash has consistently performed terribly on OS X.

Granted, but my computer went from unusable displaying Flash to iStat shows a modest CPU increase. It was one of the things that made me really happy about shelling out for a new computer. But very recently, I think 10.6.1, it has gotten much worse.

Flash is nearly always near the top when it comes to CPU usage.

It plainly sucks.

ClickToFlash

Can't live without it. Flash must die a horrible death at the hands of HTML5 and CSS3.

I love ClickToFlash but it plays hell with WebKit betas. I guess it's about time to try again. And yes, Flash must die.

I think you mean HTML5 and Canvas.

Canvas is part of HTML5.

Well, how is CSS3 going to bring the demise of Flash?

Not at all. I run WebKit nightlies exclusively and I don't have any issues.

CSS3 animated transforms.

Example: Advertising and TV Commercials - Melbourne and Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia - CMP Advertising

True, this would definitely help a great deal, I take back what I said. I hope that other W3C browsers other than Webkit based ones support this soon, this would be fun to use.

You can still use it. Firefox also supports transforms, just not animated ones. Everything else in that browser is rather jerky, so I am sure users won't know the difference

You could cheat and get your animations by combining -moz-transform with Script.aculo.us Effect.Morph though, I bet, or a setTimeout function call if you want to do it manually. I bet if you searched you could find somebody's Effect.Rotate and the equivalent extensions to the other animation toolkits.

I have to hand it to Apple. For a while Safari was lagging behind Firefox on a number of things, but now it seems clear that Webkit has leapfrogged Mozilla as the innovator in the browser space and titleholder for most advanced browser. If I could run Firebug in Safari I'd probably switch!

I reinstalled it last night and all seems to be well for now, very comforting as it's the one plugin I can't live without. I notice they added sparkle too.

Flash will start dying when YouTube abandons it, but I fear it will be a long process. There are many companies that think breaking usability and animating everything makes for an awesome site (car companies for one) and the developers have years of flash experience to apply. Hopefully they'll catch on quickly.

YouTube has laid all the groundwork for a Flash-free future, so there's still hope:

O3D is a 3D engine though, whereas Flash is a Vector based animation toolkit (among other things). I don't see the connection there as strongly as I do HTML5/Canvas and CSS3 transforms/animations.

What?

The video is irrelevant. The point is that it's served up with HTML5 <video>.

We have gone one step further on our video website and serve up HTML5 video for Everyone, falling back to QuickTime and finally Flash if all else fails:

Cool site! Are you Doc Sniper?

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the content of that particular video you posted, my mistake.

Are you supporting ogg, mp4, and Flash, or just two of these three?

I'm not Doc Sniper, we have an actor for that

Yes, webkit gets served up h.264, Firefox gets Ogg Theora. I presume IE gets Flash, although I suspect it gets an embedded QuickTime before that.
