As a hobby, I want to see some of my favorite films with as little video noise as possible, including grain, artefacts, and so on. I need to do two things:

1. get the video from the disk onto a hard drive

2. use a program to remove grain, noise and distortion

This is not for ANY commercial purpose. I just want to see older films in as pristine a condition as possible. Old films where the grain and noise are so evident, it becomes a distraction from the enjoyment of the movie or concert itself. (This would even apply to newer films where the transfer is of a poor quality such as "Heat")

Can a program like IMovie accomplish this? What programs do I need?

I don't think iMovie can. However, here're few programs you can try:

JES Video Cleaner (Free, has other tools that might be useful)
Noise Ninja (US $35)
Video Purifier (US $96)

Give Google a try. I just Googled: remove noise video "os x" and those three programs were among the links. You can also do a search on MacUpdate.com
