I never done this before and need some help (even after searching).

I want to buy/download a movie (DivX) and burn it to a DVD. I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard with iLife 09.

What apps, if any, do I need to get and what steps do I need to follow?

Hate to do it, but:

Let me google that for you

You have a number of different options. What have you tried so far and what exactly do you need help with in the process? That's probably a better question to ask here.

Yeah, I did that. Multiple times. That's what I meant by "even after searching."

But some of the info was dated and wanted to see what users are doing *currently*. And I wanted to make sure I do it right the first time. As I said, I've never downloaded a movie and burned it to DVD.

I really just need a place to start, in terms of recommended apps. Once I find a good app (iDVD won't do it, right?) I'll be fine.

Well, why don't you try the first option, ffmpegx and see if that works for you? As I said, asking specific questions about what you've tried and what didn't work is probably the best way to use the forum if you can't find a previous posting about doing this.

Seriously, I'd recommend getting a DVD player that can play DivX, then just burn the file through the finder. Way faster and simpler than thinking about transcoding.

Especially if you're talking about buying one. Presumably this means it uses the DivX DRM, and I'd be surprised if there was an easy way to break that in order to transcode to DVD. OTOH, most (all?) DivX-compatible DVD players can be authorized for DivX DRM.

You can find a list of DivX-certified DVD players on DivX's web site, and I'm sure there are options under $50 by now, since I got an HDMI-having, upscaling one for ~$75 over a year ago.

Hey, thanks. I actually just searched/checked to see if my fairly new DVD-player played DivX files and it turns out it does. I had earlier written it off because I didn't see a DivX symbol on the player itself.

I assumed I'd need to do a conversion because I have to convert the AVI files from my camera.
