I'm trying to figure out how to set up weekly scheduled backups of a disk image onto a DVD-RW. Is there a way to use the same the same DVD-RW for regularly scheduled incremental backups (even if if I have to automatically reburn the DVD-RW)? Can anyone advise me how best to accomplish this? I've tried using Get Backup w/ Toast Titanium, but it doesn't work. Any other ideas / suggestions? Thanks!

This is a bad idea. A DVD-RW is not a reliable backup medium, especially if you repeatedly erase and rewrite it until you burn a hole in it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Well it wouldn't be my principle back up -- it's just a secondary back up that I'd like to keep onto a DVD-RW.

Still a bad idea since it would be very difficult to automate and slow in addition to unreliable. With amount of blank DVDs you would work through over time you'd be better off purchasing another external drive. If you are looking for a way to do offsite backups, a small external drive (USB, Firewire or Flash) or Amazon S3 would probably be better options.

If your incremental backups are only as large as a 4.7 GB DVD then I agree with besson about a Flash thumb drive. It will be more reliable, more convenient, and faster than a DVD-RW. Regular non-rewritable DVDs are good as a secondary backup but not for incremental backups.

I agree with the others, don't use a DVD-RW.
If this is supposed to be your primary backup, I'd use an external harddrive. 10.5 and 10.6 have a backup engine built in, Time Machine, which I very much recommend. If you want a backup in your pocket (as a secondary backup), I recommend something like Mozy backup or dropbox: these are online solutions so whenever you have an internet connection, you have access to your backup. A USB stick will also work. But again, to me this is only a secondary backup. USB sticks are typically not nearly as reliable as modern harddrives.

If you need an app to go with it, have a look at Synk -- that's what I was using up until I upgraded to 10.5.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Do not use an online solution if you will be putting yourself at legal risk in having your data out there in the cloud, so to speak.

He/she mentioned it was only used as a secondary backup. I also would not use it as my primary backup either.

Even when it is not the brightest idea, aren't DVD+RW more versatile than DVD-RW ??

Neither one is particularly reliable. And especially if you keep erasing and rewriting them as the OP suggests, they will be unusable before you know it. They’ll be completely worthless as a backup strategy, even a secondary one.

I agree with the others that a USB stick is a much better match than this (as a secondary strategy).
