Handbrake 0.9.4 64-bit is out. About 10-15% faster than 32-bit

The 64-bit version of Handbrake (0.9.4) is finally out. It's a nice speedup.

Note that all the default settings have changed, so you may need to do some tweaking again.

You have to use the VLC nightlies for x64 support if you're ripping DVD disks, which is lame.

I tried to add a .srt file to a .mp4 file without success in this new 64-bit version to no avail.
I wonder if the file names would have to be the same for the .srt files to merge properly.

I don't understand. I ripped a DVD chapter with my Core i7 using Handbrake 64-bit, and it plays fine in Quicktime.

I think he means that Handbrake now makes use of VLC to rip DVDs, not that it's required for playback.

With the 0.9.3 release (last year, sigh), Handbrake ripped out all the DeCSS code and relies on VLC to be installed to handle decrypting commercial DVDs. The current release of VLC for OS X isn't 64-bit, but you can get nightly development builds that are.
Of course if you're encoding straight from DVD you're giving up performance anyway, so why bother with 64-bit.

Oh OK.
Nonetheless I'm still impressed at just how much of a speed boost many apps are getting with 64-bitness. I wasn't actually expecting a 15% boost, but that's what I'm seeing in Handbrake. For a 10 minute clip:
Handbrake 0.9.4 32-bit - 121.6 s.
Handbrake 0.9.4 64-bit - 105.5 s.
What's even more impressive is at those settings, I'm at 5.6X real-time, with 2-pass encoding (turbo 1st pass, 1500 Kbps average, x264).

Not sure if your situation is applicable, but their release page says 2-pass isn't necessary to get efficiency and quality.

Well, that's because their default setting has changed. Their default is now "constant quality" which doesn't require 2-pass.
I was using "average bitrate". Actually the settings I chose for the above test were purely for testing purposes because they reflected the previous 0.9.3 default. I wanted to compare against 0.9.3. My iPhone settings are also "average bitrate", but the numbers are different (because I didn't like the quality from the previous default settings).

I'm confused. If I rip with MacTheRipper and then encode with Handbrake, do I need 64 bit VLC?

vlc is needed only to break the css encryption on the DVD. MTR is doing that for you in your case.

Thanks. I didn't get that from the documentation.

Anyone try the 64-bit vlc? The latest version is 1.0.2 but I haven't installed it.
I've been using MacTheRipper to rip. Haven't really tested RipIt, because they charge $20 for it.

I used vlc x64 for a while but found it a bit on the buggy side, so I went back to the regular build.

I haven't had any problems with it—and it's given me much faster encodes.

Per the hb devs two pass is only really useful at low bitrates (well below a megabit). Don't waste your time when you're encoding at 1500kbps.
