This is weird.

I'm developing the next version of my website, and have a page called index.html

I set it to open in Firefox by default when I double click it. It always worked. Now, under Snow Leopard and Firefox 3.6 beta 4, I can't.

Whenever I double-click, just the starting page of Firefox, but not the page that's coded into this particular document, appears.

With Safari 4.0.4 everything works as usual.

But I can't open any html document in Firefox.

I must say, since Snow Leopard, Firefox has become a truly bug riddled browser (no bookmarking possible, no color management possible in 3.5.5 - fixed in 3.6 b4 - and now this. I can't even test my pages in Firefox as they don't load).

What's the matter with Firefox?

I don't know why you are having so many problems with Firefox under Snow Leopard because I'm not really have the same problems you are having. You might want to backup your bookmarks and then fully uninstall Firefox. After that reinstall Firefox.

Firefox seems to be boogered up. Since a reinstall takes so little time, I'd try that first, just running the installer over the existing installation. If that doesn't fix the problem, then go with EndlessMac's suggestion.

I'm guessing it might *not* be a problem with FF but with the file structure under Snow Leopard.
Took me a while to figure out the change in way LocalHost files are directoried. Wish I could remember exactly what I had to change.
Maybe try dragging the file from Finder onto FireFox (in dock). If that works, look at how the address bar shows the file's location?

Good idea.

Is there a bookmark folder so I can back it up.

I noticed that I get more and more bookmark menus, so there's definitely something brewing.

After I figured out how to back up bookmarks, I'll do a deinstall-reinstall.

Yes, I'll do that first.

In the Bookmarks menu open up the Organize Bookmarks windows and then in one of the drop down menus there is a function to export html.

Got it.

I found that Firefox had several copies of a folder called bookmarks menu (including "from safari", etc.)

I deleted these duplicates.

Then nothing worked at all.

I erased Firefox.

And when I installed 3.6 b4, number 3, it all started to work again.

My explanation of what happened. Somewhere along the line - probably when migrating to Snow Leopard, certain folders in the bookmark menu section started to duplicate. I had up to four bookmark menu folders.

Going from 3.5.5. to 3.6 b4 increased the problem. No idea how this folder fertility came to pass.

Works now.

(Today was a big fix day: Got my postscript printer to print under Snow Leopard, and then got Firefox to bookmark again. This on top of real work, of course)

The Firefox problems continue.

I still cannot preview my own HTML documents.

Let's say I code a page in TextWrangler, and define this document to open in Firefox. The Firefox icon shows on the thumbnail.

But when I double-click it, the document doesn't open.

Only Firefox opens, and shows my starting page.

PS: When I switch the "open with" definition to "Safari", it works - but the thumbnail continues to show the Firefox sign.

I wonder if this is a Snow Leopard bug or a Firefox bug.

Anyway, I can no longer test my HTML documents in Firefox. Which is very disappointing, as over 40% of my website's visitors use Firefox.

Any idea what is going on here?

Well, looks like I'm the only one with this kind of problem.

Waiting for the next beta, or the final Firefox 3.6

OK, this is probably overly obvious, but I notice you hadn't mentioned it: What happens if you drag a document onto Firefox when it's already open?

Or select Open File from Firefox's File menu?

I used the context menu, accessible through the stylus of my tablet.

Another fact:

The document that doesn't open in Firefox by double-clicking or via context menu is in a folder, that is a copy.

In the original folder, the file opens in Firefox by double-clicking.

I mean, I just copied the whole folder of the website by using Apple + D.

Any chance this could cause a corruption?

It's not especially likely, but not impossible. Try changing the "Open With" getting in the Get Info window a couple of times and see if that does anything. If it did get messed up in copying, it seems like the most likely culprit would be its LaunchServices info.

That was what it was set to: open with Firefox.

But it didn't open with Firefox, it just opened Firefox with the start page.

If I set it to open with Safari, it would open with Safari.

So there's no real rational explanation here but the file was damaged copying.

I'm going to do another copy and try it again.

PS: Firefox 3.6 beta 5 is out. Just upgraded.

I tested this matter.

I have an orignal folder with all the documents for a website. I double click index.html, it opens in Firefox.

I copy the website.

I double-click index.html in the codied folder - Firefox cannot open it.

I am on 3.6 b5

When I use the open command from inside Firefox, I can view the page.

But the link from the document "open with" breaks when it's copied.

I even tried to set a new document up, copy the contents across: it doesn't work. The "open with" command breaks in Firefox 3.6 b4 and b5

Have you tried an older version of Firefox? Have you tried renaming your preferences so new ones are created, to see what happens?

I actually moved from 3.5.5 to the 3.6 beta because color management in Firefox 3.5.5 is broken under Snow Leopard, but fixed in 3.6 beta.

This is why I wouldn't want to go back.

How do you rename preferences in Firefox? I'm unfamiliar with this. It sounds possible that there is a preference regarding the "open with" command.

PS: I went to my archive and tried to open older websites, and none of them open. It's like there can only be ONE INDEX.HTML that can be opened, and all the others are not recognized.

I'm experiencing this problem with all files in Firefox, but everything opens well in Safari.

I'm sure it's some Snow Leopard/Firefox bug that the open command doesn't work.
