I have 4 gmail accounts all accessed via POP in Thunderbird but I want to try out IMAP.

Is it safe to try out IMAP by creating a temp user account on OS X, run Thunderbird in that user and set up IMAP access in Thunderbird, while also continue to use POP access in my regular user account?

The gmail accounts are all set up to have both POP and IMAP active.

Why do so many people have apparent natural aversions to IMAP and affinity for POP? POP has been out of date for many years. IMAP is the natural client protocol for most every mail server (aside from Exchange BS).

There are no dangers that I can think of any way you look at it, derekw. IMAP mail is not downloaded to your computer (only cached there), and POP has absolutely no understanding of message flags or folders. There is nothing you can screw up just taking your current account and flipping the IMAP switch.

I do recommend the switch too.

I should add that if my IMAP trial runs well in the temp user account, I would delete everything in that user account and plan on switching to IMAP in my regular set up.

The reason I am taking baby steps to switch over is that I have tens of thousands on old emails some 3 GB size. The switch over could take many hours. I do not want any mistakes that could result in duplicate mails, lost mails. I also would like to preserve as much 'meta data' from old emails as possible, such as 'replied' status, etc. The switch over process is what is scary, since IMAP actions change server data, mistakes could be irreversible. In POP, whatever I do locally won't damage what's on the server (I leave all mails on server). Thanks for hte help.

Yeah, that sounds like a pretty situation.

I'd bet he doesn't even realize that all his fancy organizing of mails into folders was in vain, and all deleted mail will still reside in this giant 3GB POP inbox.

The whole point of IMAP is that you can have multiple computers accessing the same account from multiple places. There's no danger whatsoever in trying it out with a temporary account.
