There are now effectively zero Mac developers of VLC according to this post on the Video Lan Forum, a situation which the author calls critical. This sounds like bad news for the health of alternative Mac video viewers.

That's unfortunate. I'm not sure why VLC always seems to have so much trouble getting Mac devs. I know the platform has a much lower ratio of coders to users, but VLC seems to be uncommonly hard to find people for.

I should hope that the core of the app would be written using cross-platform code, and that the only part that would be affected by the lack of Mac devs would be the interface (which any Joe on the street could fix up and submit a patch should the need arise).

How many programs do you know with truly cross-platform code so reliable that you can test it on one platform and feel reasonably certain that it will work anywhere?

VLC is still alpha, isn't it? We've always been the ones doing the testing anyway.

version 1 came out a few months ago or more, so they're out of the decade-long (or close to it) sub-1.0 phase.

It's not labeled as alpha anywhere I can see. And I don't know about you, but I've never gone into VLC with a debugger and tracked down any problems, much less written and tested a patch, so our testing is of limited utility as far as having a working Mac version goes.

That's very disappointing to hear about VLC especially since it finally has reached the version 1 final stage.
