Anyone using a Blackberry Curve 8310 and having success with syncing to iCal, Address book and Tasks?

I've spent the better part of today and yesterday being duped into
downloading and believing that the Blackberry Desktop Manager via
"Blackberry for Mac" actually will do the simple job of having appointments
show up on both my Curve and Macbook. Ain't happening.

What a joke. I actually believe that it's a ploy by Blackberry to suck the
time and life out of us Mac users. (You should see the bazillion posts
on the Blackberry forum about not being able to sync to iCal.)

But all kidding aside, I sure would like to simply sync between my
MacBook and my Blackberry Curve in order to keep current about
schedules, dates, appointments.

If anyone has some simple steps they could offer, I would
be much obliged. Haven't seen a post on this issue recently
and yes, I'm considering Missing Sync.

I know there's a lot of people using Blackberry Curves who have
Apples, so please share the secret.

Thanks.

I've been syncing my iCal to Google Calendar, then syncing my BlackBerry to Google Calendar... I don't know of a good reliable way to do it directly with the Mac, but Google Calendar works great as a intermediary.

Yes, have a look at Missing Sync: BlackBerry Sync Mac - Bluetooth sync for BlackBerry and Mac with iTunes, Entourage, iCal and iPhoto

I used Missing Sync back in the Palm days. It worked ok (not always perfect).

Thanks to you both for helping out.

I've heard about the extra step of syncing via the Google Calendar,
and while I might invest the time to set up a calendar in Google and
set up syncing via Google, on principle it seems ridiculous that
RIM touts Blackberry for Mac sync abilities but it's sooooo laborious.
Why can't I just plug in my phone to my computer and get a successful
sync--something straightforward.

I used to use Pocket Mac and it was glitchy.

Missing Sync, for 40 bucks seems like a gamble as well given the
several posts and comments around the web about their poor
performance and customer service. I don't mind paying, mind you,
I just want to feel more confident in the product.

Sure, understandable.

Are there any trial versions of it ?

Blackberry Desktop for Mac worked like a dream for me... both local and network calendars and my local address book. Stopped using it only because I'm now on BES/Exchange.

The third party options (PocketMac, Missing Sync) are awful, I never got them to work consistently.

what is the hassle in having your calendars synced to google then synced to the Blackberry through the Google Sync app? it works flawlessly and you have access to the calendars on a desktop if the need arises.

Contacts too

Tasks is another things though. I'd prefer a wireless solution as opposed to having to plug the phone in every time.

Would you be so kind as to post what you did, from beginning to end, (install, first sync, forget device, etc.) in the exact order that you did when you downloaded
Blackberry Desktop for Mac?

It is encouraging to hear it works like a dream once it works. I've spent the better part of two days attempting to achieve a simple sync--installing, uninstalling, uninstalling Pocket Mac, reading posts, instructions and rants on the Blackberry Forum.

If you would take the time to spell out specifically the steps needed you'd be
a hero in my book.

Ok, then. I'll give it a whirl, abbaZaba.

Thanks for the strong advocacy.

Download/install BB Desktop.
Connect BB to computer.
Apply any available software updates.
Sync contacts Mac<->BB.
Resolve any conflicts when they pop up.
Add one calendar to syncing, sync Mac<->BB.
Add the rest of your calendars one by one, sycning Mac<->BB between them.
Viola.

I liked the idea of the OTA Google syncing, but it never really worked for me.

mduell, when I saw your seven steps for how you
sync'd your BB with your Mac using the BB Desktop
Manager, I said to myself, "Done everyone one of those
exact steps about 15 times--except for the Contacts.
I haven't tried syncing just the contacts--just iCal"

So since you took the time and trouble to
list what you did I gave it a whirl and started
with the Contacts.

Short story: No Viola! here!! Still no transfer of
contacts between my Macbook and
my Blackberry Curve 8310. Or iCal appointments.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious,
but I can't find what it is.

So here's what I did:

Since this was the first time synchronizing the Contacts,
a window came up warning of this and said it advised
replacing device data with computer data to I clicked
on the highlighted "Replace data device" vs "Merge data".
Other than that, I followed every one of your steps.

Download/install BB Desktop.
Done that about three times now. Complete install
and uninstall.

Connect BB to computer.
Check.

Apply any available software updates.
Check. Window said I have the latest version.
(Did not check for other Mac related updates, though
only used the application button on DM menu.)

Sync contacts Mac<->BB.
Check.

Resolve any conflicts when they pop up.
None came up in the Desktop Manager window.
However, I noticed the icon on my menu
bar twirling around and eventually 17 conflicts
were resolved.
Also, the blue bar never filled up on the drop down window
while my sync was supposedly happening and I was told to not disconnect
the device.

Add one calendar to syncing, sync Mac<->BB.
Did not do this step. Instead checked if the
contacts sync'd.

Add the rest of your calendars one by one, sycning Mac<->BB between them.
As stated above, did not get to this step.

Viola!
No Viola! All addresses are gone from
my Blackberry. Mild panic beginning.

However, I did do a back up and under
"Device" in the menu, I clicked "Restore device"
and now Viola! they came back!. Phew!

What this did though was tell me that my computer and
my BB are talking because I was able to restore the missing
addresses.

I continued to follow your steps over and
over, ( five more times) and will spare you all the notes I took,
but alas, I have not succeeded in having the
simple synchronization you've had.

Once during these attempts the blue bar did fill during
a so called sync (that message comes up when you've
clicked the green sync button and you also
see a gray bar that starts to fill blue, that says "you are connected
and the following items are being synchronized. Do not
disconnect your device." So for a moment I had hope.

I did further digging and was told to check if I had sync services
on. In system preferences it sync is tied to Mobileme which
I'm not using. Then I go to iSync and click on "add device" and get
the message "iSync cannot connect to this device."

It works like a dream for you, but you're a rarity in this
realm so be thankful.

If you have any other thoughts or ideas, mduell I would
be open to trying them. Thanks so much for your interest
thus far.

Now listen, I hear some of you saying, "Go get an iPhone and
quit spending your time and our space on this nonsense." It's
so tempting, but not the solution for me right now. I just want
a Viola! like mduell.

I'm pasting a response from a poster in the Blackberry Forum who
is helping those of us who are just trying to have what you have.
So in case someone else is struggling with this issue and would like
to read further you'll see that mduell never had to clear a cache
or run repair permissions to achieve a simple, works like a dream,
sync:

"I'm happy to try to help...the first part is the correct installation. I started a thread on how to do this. You must remove all third party sync software completely BEFORE installing DMFM. See here:

Show my posts - BlackBerry Support Community Forums...

You will need to clear the system and user cache as well (get OnyX for this). You say you don't have iSync...that is unusual, you should have it regardless.

Now as far as the device goes...I did not clear mine (was previously syncing with pocket mac) and had no problems. You will need to check to see how many calendars you have (in iCal and on the device). You cannot sync the multiple calendars from iCal as multiple calendars on the device although all events will sync as one calendar. I suggest you follow the advice I gave in the link to setup address book and ical. I would first backup address book and ical (for ical file/export/ical archive), then try reseting sync services. You could also try deleting everything in iCal and then restore from your backup...this will ensure the files are where they are supposed to be). Clear the cache, empty the trash and restart the mac...run repair permissions and then install DMFM. Remember if you are using unusual characters or unusually long entries this could cause problems. The sync field maps are NOT identical, so not everything will sync.

Also describe exactly what settings you are using for the sync...I always use faster sync and delete device data."

2 + 2 = ...

If you want to keep the data that's currently on the device, you have to merge. Then it will prompt you to reconcile any conflicts manually (same name, "work" email on one side, "mobile" email on the other side).

I have done that, "merge" that is, on one of my
previous initial attempts after uninstalling and re-installing and
starting over as if for the first time.

Didn't work.

Do you think it could be my phone? As I said
in the lengthy post above, it was actually a good
thing that I could restore the device because it
showed that there was a connection.

What does "didn't work" mean? Did it prompt you for conflicts?
