I have a large mp3 collection. that is organized just the way I want it on my external hdd. Is there any software that will allow me to edit the id3 tags before I import the files to itunes? I have found that pollux, tuneup and tidy songs are great if you are not working with any live music or greatest hits or different compilations. any help would be greatley appreciated.

Welcome to our forums!

You do realize that you can edit the tags within iTunes, right? You do not have to let iTunes organize your music, or do anything automatically to it to be able to open a file, use "Get Info" to see the tag data, and edit it.

Unless you need something beyond fixing the tags on a few songs at a time, iTunes can be your solution.

There are several simple command line utilities that you can install to do this, I use id3ed all the time for this on my servers.

I run FreeBSD and CentOS on my servers. id3 tag information is embedded within the file itself, so yes, the files are portable once the tags have been applied. id3ed works on a whole host of Unix based OSes.

I haven't used mp3 rage in ages - once I got everything labelled, there was no point. New additions are usually edited with iTunes, which got a lot better over the years.

Adding to my last post, if you were to tag your stuff in iTunes and fetch these files from your Music folder, their ID3 tags would remain intact. Your best bet is definitely iTunes unless you have a need for a CLI solution like I do

Audacity can also edit the id3 tags or put in new ones if there are none there.
