I'm assessing the options for getting Hulu to work on my Dad's iBook G4. It has a newish (about 3 years old) hard drive, and I just recently upgraded it to 1.25GB RAM, and it's a 1GHz G4 running 10.3.9.

Hulu requires Flash version 10 which requires at least OSX 10.4 on a PPC Mac. If I installed 10.4 or 10.5 on this iBook, would the Flash player 10 run smoothly on standard res Hulu 360p in the small window on this machine? Or is this a pointless thing to try?

It should run decently I'd expect, at least under 10.4.

It will work, but the playback will not be smooth at all. It will be jerky and the audio will be out of sync.

I have a 1GHz G4 PowerBook with 10.4 and Hulu is not really watch-able.

The problem is that Flash on MacOS X is an abomination.
Even with a C2D Mac Flash will still hog the processor.

A cheap $300 PC can play Flash, better than most modern Macs.

so isn't it lucky that we're getting all those rumors about Hulu experimenting with a site that will allow the iPad to play? Nice potentially huge market, all the iPads soon-to-be-sold...all of them without flash...

Well, that is the big question. If this rumored iPad/iPhone friendly non-flash Hulu uses Quicktime instead of flash, maybe that would work on OSX also.

Thanks. That's what I kinda thought. You just saved me a bunch of trouble.

One more question... Is there a PPC Linux distro that runs flash player v.10 better than OSX does?
