I recently purchased a Mac desktop and although it came with quick time it wouldn't play windows media files. I downloaded from the Apple site a windows media player for mac and when I tried to connect to an internet radio station (that told me I needed windows media player to listen) I got the following error message.

The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
Any one have a suggestion?
Thanks
Mark.

download and install Perian. It may help.

Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime components

What specific internet radio station are you trying to get?

Also install Flip4Mac if you haven't already. Download Flip4Mac WMV Player for Mac - Play Windows Media in QuickTime Player. MacUpdate Mac Software Downloads

I can get the stream to work using a great application called VLC. Download VLC Media Player for Mac - Multimedia player. MacUpdate Mac Software Downloads

If Perian and Flip4Mac don't work, download VLC (probably a good idea to download it anyway since it's so good). It's File > Open Network... option will let you paste in the stream's url.

For what it's worth, VLC will also play mms streams (which is what you're linking to when you click the "Broadband/DSL" link on their Listen Live page.)

Why is WiMP not already dead? The WiMP plugin is so last century. Even Flash would be an upgrade, and Flash is trash.

See, my question is why are people still able to download WMP for Mac? That app is deader than dead, just like IE for Mac (which, incidentally, is much harder to find and download).

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Can people really download the Windows Media Player for Mac still? I thought MS had replaced it completely on their servers with Flip4Mac... but well. I admit I'm not privy to the darkest places of the MS servers

Yup. Not too hard to find, either.

Honestly, though, I can understand why some people might actually still use WMP. It does what it does in a simple, stand-alone package. For a lot of people, it's probably all they'll ever need when it comes to Windows media. Eventually, of course, it will cease to work with some future version of OS X. Still works in SL, though, thanks to Rosetta.
