Google Earth Finder window keeps popping up

Periodically, a Finder window pops up with the Google Earth application, similar to what it would look like if I opened the installer disk image file. It disappears pretty quickly. Is this some sort of google earth update feature or have I contracted something malicious? Is there any way to get it to stop? I don't really use google earth, so I'm happy to uninstall it if that is the solution, but I would like to know what is going on.
