Hi

I am creating a site, using html5 and would like to upload an .ogv video, in order to accomplish the recquirements of
mozilla firefox. I have a video in the mpg4 Format and I desperately try to convert it into an .ogv file. There seems to
be several ways to encode it, but none of it works out.

1. I try to convert it under mac os snow leopard (my operating system) using the vlc media player. The process stops without an output or message.

2. I have parallels installed in order to make it possible to work on also within a windows surronding. I installed another version of the vlc player (this time for windows xp), and try to convert it with this programm. The same result as above.

3. I downloaded several free conversion software packages for windows (because I understood that for several reason the transforming of an mpg4 into ogv is difficult on a mac), I've installed this software, but with the same
output: NOTHING.

Please has somebody already down this on a similar surrounding, (MAC OS 10 xxx? ) ?

I have no further idea an I will have to use this technique know and especially in the future.

thank you in advance for all hints or help.

Mathias

The previous version (0.9.3) of handbrake could convert to ogg vorbis in an ogg container. No longer supported but you can get it from oldversion.com or similar.

I use the Xiph QuickTime components and export using QuickTime 7 Pro. Works fine. The only thing is you have to rename the .ogg into .ogv for Firefox to recognize the file.

Hi, yes in the meantime I 've found the same solution, (quicktime 7). It is a bit strange, that it is only possible with this older version.

I found a detailed description simply at wikipedia :-)

Hilfe:Videos konvertieren und hochladen – Wikipedia

I didn't try the first solution---> ffmpeg2theora, seems to be rather complicated.

Thank you for your help !

I am very weary about going into the terminal but i had the same issue and decided to try it out. It actually turned out to be very simple. Here are the steps:

1) Go here: ffmpeg2theora and download the mac os x universal binary of ffmpeg2theora
2) Run the installer
3) fire up terminal and open up the finder window where the video file is located
4) In terminal, type: fmpeg2theora
5) leave a space after ffmpeg2theora and drag the file you want to convert into the terminal window. This will put down the correct path to the file.
6) Hit Enter
That's it! You can play around with the settings if you want but i never do, i just always convert the mp4 or m4v file like this and it works perfect.

If you have any questions let me know. Here are the screenshots that should help:
