So I whipped up a nice 45 minute 1080p video in Final Cut Express. I've tried a few quicktime exports but they all come out like shit. So then I tried a few huge exports, like using Apple Intermediate Codec, to try to get the video into handbrake, which does awesome quality transcodes. But I can't find a format that handbrake will accept as input. Anyone know any tricks to getting your video from FCE, into Handbrake?

Just about anything that's not Apple proprietary (AIC, ProRES, Pixlet) should work. I can't find a listing of FCE export options online but use an industry standard like HDV, raw yuv, MJPEG, or just really high bitrate MPEG4/H.264 to get out of FCE.

I couldn't find a way to export to HDV, only (SD) DV. FCE uses a standard quicktime export window, so anything that works with quicktime, but which of those work with Handbrake?

Any of the standards I mentioned will work with HB; it's just the Apple proprietary options where you run into trouble. And you're right when I do a QuickTime export from iMovie '09 I don't have HDV or DVCPRO HD as options, I guess those are only for FCP.

MJPEG ("Photo - JPEG" in QT) is probably the quickest option to get it out of FCE. With the quality at best it's about 200Mbps at 1080p30 so your clip will be ~70GB.

Raw yuv ("None" in QT) will also work, but it's about ten times the size of MJPEG.

What playback device/constraints are you targeting? What HB preset/settings are you using?

You could export the movie to an HD iDVD image, then apply Handbrake to that.

I tossed my video and I'm going to reacquire it fresh. Once I do, i'll try the MJPEG and post back. How do I export to an iDVD HD image? I don't recall seeing that one in FCE?

FCE may not export directly to iDVD. I was thinking of iMovie.

You mean an HD-DVD image in iDVD? What compressor is used? I suspect it's going to be slower and lower quality (although smaller) than MJPEG.
