...the old "deauthorize all of 'em and then reauthorize the ones you still want authorized" routine?

sort of. Although my iTunes account page is telling me I only have 4 out of my 5 machines authorised so I can't globally deauthorise. However many of my music tracks are telling me I have 5 out of 5 machines authorised so they wont sync to my apple TV.

I may have to try authorising one of my daughters Macs to bring it up to five and try to globally nuke them from then.

That should sync everything up-either you really do have 5 authorized and iTunes won't let you add your daughter's computer, or you only have 4 when you start and hers will be the 5th.

I wish Apple would provide an interface to selectively get rid of previously registered iTunes systems. Then again, I also think that we should be allowed more than 5 computers per account.

They do offer an interface-but you have to use the computer you're deauthorizing to do it. Otherwise, they'd have to provide some clue about what they use to identify each system, and thus open the authorization thing up to "investigative code tinkering." So they either make it work to limit the number of authorized systems, or they make it convenient and at the same time insecure.
