1st , I'm a Mac newbie. I run an iMac 10.4.11

when in 'system preferences' and click on 'network' I automatically receive this dropdown window....

"your network settings have been changed by another application"

no matter how many times I click on the "OK", the dropdown continues. I can only break out of this by 'force quit'. how can I fix this problem?

Known and common and utterly stupid bug, if this is what I think it is.

Go into the "security" system preference and check "require password to unlock each system preferences pane" (or whatever it's called in 10.4).

Close System Preferences, open them again and try again.

If that didn't help, uncheck the option again, close SysPrefs, open them and try again.

You can uncheck that option afterwards.

I posted an answer here.

Short version, which works for most people:

System Preferences -> Date & Time -> the "Set Date and Time Automatically" checkbox. Whatever it is set to, click it. After a moment, click again to return it to whatever you normally have it on.
