There were plenty of other issues, including spinning beach balls, application crashes etc. So that was part of the whole fixinating.
Turns out the client had bought a new laptop and migrated her data over fine, however she then did a load of work on the iMac and then decided to try to copy this over too. So reconnected the two and tries to use migration assistant again (!!) but got it the wrong way round and migrated stuff BACK onto the iMac.
iMac was running 10.5, laptop 10.6 so loads of apps ended up running under the wrong OS.
Took some sorting.
