About two days ago when I clicked the new tab button at top left safari page, the screen froze and went blank. I also cannot open a tab in the file option. It says there is something wrong with my EIA plug in. I have updated the computer, I have tried to update safari and nothing has helped. Does anyone know what issues or glitches there are for 10.6.4 MAC xOS? Thank you

Do you have Safari Extensions enabled?

If so, which extensions do you have installed?

"Safari" --> "Preferences" --> "Extensions" (if it's there)

What's the message in the dialog box when it crashes - the thing about the EIA plug-in?

Post it verbatim, please.

"Safari quit unexpectedly while using the eia plugin" then it has the typical re-open or OK options with a message about sending a report to safari automatically.

Have a look through
yourharddrive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and
yourhomefolder/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

and see if you can find a plug-in called something like "eia".

both of them? That cannot be, unless something is very seriously messed up.

If you're having trouble locating the two folders I mentioned above, go into the Finder, and then select the "Go" menu --> "Go to folder…" and paste these lines, one at a time:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

and

/Users/analogika/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

OK, I did that and the folder in library that says internet plug-ins is empty. Ugh this gets frustrating.

Alright, I figured it out. Apparently with the snow leopard safari, you have to go into preferences and make sure the boxes are all checked and that it says 'automatically' where it asks 'open pages in tabs instead of windows'. Mine was not for some reason. Thank you for your help!!

Trashing the Safari.plist fixes the issue.
Force Quit Safari and open a New Finder Window.
Navigate into your user Library, then Preferences folder. Find the com.apple.Safari.plist and drag it to the trash. You can trash the com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist file as well, if you see it.

I have been having this exact same problem for a while now, so I went through and tried all of the previously mentioned problems. Yesterday, everything was fine once I set it to automatic. But today all of a sudden it won't work again. I've tried changing all the tab settings to every possible option as well as all the other solutions listed but nothing is working.

If anyone knows how to solve this that would be great!!

Might re-installing Safari help?

reinstalling Safari may help. Safari is an Optional install on your Mac OSX install DVD (disc1). First trash your safari from the Applications folder. Trash the plist file as mentioned earlier in the thread. You can also remove the shortcut from your dock, if you want to. Once removed, insert the MacOSX install DVD and choose Optional Installs. Progress through the screens until you get to a checklist. You may need to click the triangles to point down and provide more options. Click on the box next to Safari, and continue with the installation of it.

Remember, that once you finish installing Safari, you may not have the latest update. You may get messages stating your Safari is not up to date, and If you have the latest software updates, you'll probably get a message that your software is already up to date. You will need to download the latest Combo Update from the Apple website to fix the issue. I'd recommend installing the combo update, regardless. I guess it's personal peace of mind that everything is updated properly after such a task.
