Several fonts (Arial and Times New Roman) are not available Office 2008 applications, but they are available in other applications, such as TextEdit.

My default font is Arial, and when I start typing in a blank document the words don't appear. I then go to my font list and Arial is not listed there anymore. if I change the font from Arial to a different font, then the text appears.

I've tried deleting the font cache and it doesn't change anything.

How do I fix this?

I'd simply uninstall then reinstall Office. Office is really weird about fonts sometimes, so a reinstall would probably fix it. Of course, also check that your current install is up-to-date.
