I got a new iMac a couple of months ago. On my PC I had Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard which allowed me to type data in a PDF and to save it in folders; I used it to fill in IRS tax forms. Is there a way I can do that on the iMac?

Open any word processing app (try Text Edit to start). Type something. Click File|Print. Select "Save as PDF." Name the document. You're done.

OS X has PDF as a native-supported output format. It couldn't be simpler. You can also edit PDFs, adding and removing pages at will, using Preview.

Unfortunately not all forms work with Preview, but Adobe Reader for Mac WILL let you fill forms. You just can't create them without additional software.

Adobe Acrobat will do that, just like Adobe Acrobat did it for you on Windows.

Unfortunately, there is no Acrobat Standard for Mac. It's a Windows-only version. Mac users are stuck with having to get Acrobat Pro, which runs about $150 more than Standard.

As noted, Adobe Reader will let you fill-out forms. However, Reader cannot save a filled-out form on its own. The form itself has to have been created using Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions ES software, which will enable the "local save" capability.

I've not tried the File>Save>Save as PDF from inside Reader. I'm not sure if Adobe has somehow disabled that ability in Reader.

Oh, sorry—I missed that ‘Standard’ after ‘6.0’ in the OP.

There are some Mac apps that let you do this to PDFs, whether they have fillable fields or not. Go to macupdate.com and look around for 'pdf forms' or 'forms pdf' and a variety of results should pop up.

I wouldn't think so, but I'll have to check to find out. That is typically a property of the document, not the app.

Yep, it's a property of the document, not Reader. Look at this grab from Adobe Reader 8:
