I was hoping to be able to import several HD videos in .avi format into iMovie 9, but iMove doesn't seem to recognize them. Is there a workaround short of using QT Pro to convert them all into a QT movie that iMovie does recognize?

iMovie doesn't handle other formats because it's the low-end consumer video editing software. It's more complex, but the free MPEG Streamclip is the video equivalent of GraphicConverter in that it lets you work with (view/edit) most every video format.
