Ive been using THOTH for a very long time. I also use Unison but THOTH gathers the headers somehow quicker that Unison so i use it for some groups.
a long time ago in a time and OS I cant remember THOTH had trouble DLing all the headers and said that there was not enough memory to complete the task. I literally cant remember when that was or how I fixed it but I recall I got advice here about a 'memory leak'
currently I have a MacPro with 3 GB of memory and THOTH has been working fine for a long long time.
Not today: a NG with only 500,000 headers wont load because THOTH says there is not enough memory. try closing windows etc etc.
I closed everything and rebooted and just opend THOTH and that newsgroups. No Go!
Activity monitor says THOTH has 1.35 of real memory and 3.56 of virtual M.
whats going on and what might I do to fix this (other than buy more Memory!)
many thanks!

Any 32bit app gets 4 GB of virtual memory no matter how much real memory there is in the computer. Presumably that group you want to load would use more than the half gig or so of memory that remains. To get around this, you'd need a 64bit version of Thoth, but quite frankly I think it's a bug in the app. That an app like this would need 4 gigs to open 500 000 headers sounds strange. Thoth has had some silent updates, accoridng to this page, so downloading a new version might help.

thanks for your input. I actually am a registered user of THOTH but only 1.7.1 I hesitate to update as I have no idea what my serial number is or how to make sure the 1.8.4 will work for me.
that being said, I also cant recall if the memory leak issues were in a much early OS or if recently Ive DL more that 500,000 headers with THOTH with no problem. Im fairly sure I have.
but I guess Ill have to rely on Unison for this group and see if THOTH will DL less that 500,000 in the future.
many thanks again!

I merged your other thread with this one to keep the entire discussion in one place, because your last question has an easy answer: That wouldn't solve your problem even if you could. You are low on virtual memory, not on real memory. You coudl run yoru app alone on a computer with 1TB of RAM, and you would still get the same error.

It's a standalone app. You can have both on your Mac. It won't overwrite the old version. So download it and give it a shot.
Having said that... Thoth was always buggy when I used it long ago. It was designed for Classic Mac OS and I always got the impression that the developer tried to do the bare minimum to get it functioning on OS X.

many many thanks!
is there a way to increase virtual memory? is it because my HD has only 116 GB available now?
what if I just dumped the THOTH app icon and put a newly opened one in its place?
this all happened, and I believe the app is corrupt by asking it to DL more than 999999 headers, then I deleted them and tried open the rest.
I have two NG servers and two THOTH server windows one for each.
the one rarely used did searches that worked where the main one gave me the memory alert.
but as a Dumb Koff i asked the second one to do what drove the first THOTH server window crazy.
Im a
cheers and many thanks for your help!

Move on to a different app. There is nothing you can do to overcome a poorly designed app.

Have you tried the new version?
is there a way to increase virtual memory?
No, it's inherent in 32bit programming. It's the reason we're moving to 64bit, even though it's so hard (especially on the Windows side). If it here as easy as a software setting, noone would bother.
is it because my HD has only 116 GB available now?
No.
what if I just dumped the THOTH app icon and put a newly opened one in its place?
You mean removing it from the Dock? Makes no difference at all. Ever.
this all happened, and I believe the app is corrupt by asking it to DL more than 999999 headers, then I deleted them and tried open the rest.
This implies that it might be an issue related to your preferences. Close the app, move your preferences file to the Desktop and reopen see if that helps.
