I have an appl iSight

which I now confess Ive never used.

id like to use it to connect to some friends that now have mac books and iMacs

is there an app that would do this?

other than somthing from AOL?

if so how might i (we) configure this

Uhm, yeah, Apple's iChat, duh!

It uses AIM accounts, wich are free.

Yahoo works too.
Once Messenger:Mac 8 comes out - that should also do it.
There are 3rd party IM clients for OS X that may also support webcams, I've not tried any of them for years though.

Works fine with Skype, too, which has become a de facto standard, as well.
