I have a customer that buys new hard drives from a guy in california. They cost a few hundred dollars. Thats more than a new hard drive costs, but these drives come preloaded with EVERY app under the sun. Mac OS, Adobe CS, FCP, etc etc. The works. Customer swears it's all totally legal, that the guy has found some loophole in the law that makes this legal. He apparently has a "booming" software pirating business. What do you think of this? I've told the customer many times that of course he says it's legal, otherwise people wouldn't buy it. I've also told her if she's going to pirate software, at least pirate it herself. Either way the developers are getting nothing. Also, if you're wondering what happens when something goes wrong and an app or an OS needs to be reinstalled, the answer is disaster happens because there are no discs and no way to reinstall anything. Is there some crazy loophole that makes this kind of selling of pirated software legal? (p.s. I'm already under the assumption that the answer is "hell no, what a retarded question") Also no I don't know the guy's name or anything, and I don't want to know. I want nothing to do with that whole situation, beyond this thread.

I'd get a third party opinion on the legality, like from the FBI.

If they say it's kosher, I'd buy them.

IMO: complete BS.

Absolutely, positively bullshit unless you live in China or Russia.

Some could conceivably be corporate licenses, but those are site licenses, and if you're neither on-site nor an employee, you're out.

I doubt the software vendors would ever agree this is within the license.

There's no way that's legal.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
