I just noticed that i can no longer ZOOM in on an individual photo. (I'm not talking about making it FULL SCREEN). I'm talking about looking at a photo and using the ZOOM to see up close details of a certain part of the picture.

Update: I figured out that you can ZOOM, but you have to be in Edit Mode.

THIS SUCKS! I zoom in and out of photos all the time. To have to click the Edit Button first is a terrible idea!
I'm thinking of uninstalling!

Why would they add another step to be able to ZOOM?

In iPhoto '09 you can also only zoom in in Edit mode.

In the iPhoto preferences, there was an option that said "Double-Click Photo: Edits Photo". This meant that when i double clicked a photo, it automatically appeared in the Edit mode and i was able to zoom. If you didn't choose "Edits Photo", the other option was "Magnifies Photo", and then yes, you would be correct, you have to click Edit to be able to zoom.

In iPhoto 11, this option is gone.
Now i have to manually click the Edit button before being able to ZOOM into a photo. I don't consider Zooming in a photo an Edit. I rarely change anything, but just want to zoom.

This is ridiculous!

I believe that zooming in on a picture in iPhoto is considered redundant because screen zooming is already built into the OS. Just make sure that Screen Zooming is turned on in your Mouse preference pane.

That makes no sense at all.

Screen zooming just enlarges and fuzzes all pixels on the screen at any time.

Zooming into an image actually shows more detail.

I agree with Spheric, they aren't the same. Totally different!

Apple, this was a huge mistake by you. Please fix in your next update.
Zooming isn't an Edit. And i (like many other people) zoom all the time. It's annoying to have to click edit first.

Additionally, i just noticed that you can't compare two photos side by side without using the Edit feature as well. It's just terrible!
I wish i never installed this new iLife. Typically with new versions you increase functionality, why are we taking major steps back?

Well, I was a bit freaked out from a few of the changes, BUT... I have quite quickly gotten used to just hitting command-E and jumping into edit mode. I'm considering making my mouse scroll button do a cmd-e in iPhoto.

I don't want to bicker about it, but they didn't remove any functionality, they just moved it.

I never really liked the zoom function, because there was no 100% or "actual size". Whenever I would zoom, I would wonder to myself "Is this picture out of focus, or have I zoomed past 100%?"

Are you using an Apple mouse?
if so, how do you make the scoll ball into a Command E (just for iPhoto and not other application use) ?
Also, if you do make the scroll ball into a Command E, then you lose the ability to scoll the photos up and down the page. So not sure if that would be a good thing.

No, no apple mice for me. I use a Radtech mouse. It includes a preference pane that allows configuration of the buttons on a global or 'per app' basis.

(Yes, the prefpane is not in 64 bit and you have to restart system prefs, but their tech support is excellent and the product is good.)

I noticed that when you are creating a Book, you can no longer view the photos you selected for the Book in full screen.

So for example, i drag 50 photos to the book i'm creating. then randomly add another 50 over time.
now i want to make my book and i look at the photos on the various pages (assume i did autoflow) and now i want to compare photos that are unused or all the photos available for the book. I can't view any of these in full screen or large enough to see good detail to help decide which photos i want to use or not use.

iPhoto 11 is a bit of a cluster**** because the new fullscreen interface is obviously designed to be identical to the iPad version.

The new easy adjust buttons, the toolbar items at the bottom - they make perfect sense in an upcoming iPad app (with 4.2 perhaps?).

Unfortunately, the Mac is not an iPad. I'll give it another couple daysand see if it's just something unfamiliar, or whether I actually prefer the old application interface, before installing it on my own machine.

I want iLife 11 primarily for iMovie.

Not disagreeing, but did want to point out we faced a similar issue with iMovie '08. Eventually we did get a lot of the missing features back, but it took some time. But definitely not a fan of taking 3 steps back to go 1 step forward, as seems to be the case for iPhoto '11.

To get your pictures you could either do it old school: Go to your Home folder > Pictures > iPhoto Library > control click --> show Package contents > Masters. Your originals 'should' be located there. Drag and drop them to any location you want them saved.

Or either you download something like File Juicer, drag and drop the iPhoto Library folder into File Juicer main window and the app would extract the pictures, worked fine here. Albeit you end getting more files than the jpg themselves.
