With one of the latest MS updates to Entourage, probably 12.2.7, displaying images in HTML mails disappeared. Inconsistently. But the fix, "resize the mail window" is still there. Most annoying, but easy to work around.
I spent way too much time looking at email server settings, account options, and even setting up new accounts, trying to get to the bottom of this. I didn't think that Microsoft would make the same goof more than once, but obviously I was wrong. I recommend that anyone else who experiences this bug complain to Microsoft. I'm planning to submit a bug report by this weekend, once I figure out my wording.
Just thought I'd share.

Or you could upgrade to Outlook. It uses WebKit to render HTML messages.

Outlook for Mac? Is Office 2011 really worth the upgrade from 2008? Aside from the hassle factor, this is something that MS has fixed before and I expect them to (quietly) fix again-never admitting that they released the wrong code, of course.

I'm very happy with Office 2011 although I'm only using it for Word and Excel. I can't use Outlook because my company is still using Exchange 2003 (Outlook for Mac requires at least 2007).

I firmly believe that Exchange is the devil-glad I don't have to deal with it. I'll have to look at O-'11... I just hadn't bothered before. Too bad it doesn't have something like Access along with everything else (I don't "like" Access, but I spent a lot of time learning to make it tap dance and that sort of capability might come in handy).

You are wrong. I have seen the devil - it is Lotus Notes.

Absolutely. I think one of our Sys Admins is still in counseling from the PTSD of having to deal with that abomination of a system.
And the other big reason for me (and my company) to upgrade to Office '11 was the return of VBA in Excel.

OK, I concede on Lotus Notes-from reports, not personal experience. But Exchange is at least a minor demon.

@glenn
I encountered this issue today. There used to be a banner at the top of messages, which I could click to load images in emails. That option has gone away, and now I have only limited options in Preferences: Load, Load for senders in address book, Don't load. Not idea because for commercial senders (Amazon, etc.), I'd rather not add them to my address book to get images.
Unfortunately I don't have a solution, just corroborating your issue.

The work-around really, really is to just resize the mail reading window (the window with the individual email in it) even just a little bit. The "download pictures" banner just shows up almost instantly.
