The chat window at the bottom of the facebook page on my iMac has disappeared, it is not showing in Safari or Firefox, it is also not showing on my other account on the iMac but it is still there on my MacBook. It disappeared before but returned after I did an erase and install a few months ago, I also noticed that on some web pages after filing in information there was no response. I have tried resetting Safari and also trashed the preferences, but as this is happening on both accounts that is not the solution. Advice would be appreciated.
Terry.

Sounds like you have something fairly major missing or corrupted. Looks like facebook chat is powered by Ajax. Reinstalling your OS is probably the easiest way to fix this. I don't know how you'd manually repair it.

If, as indicated, he had the problem before; it was partially remedied by an Erase and & Install and now has returned, there could be a RAM problem.

The OS and underlying hardware are exactly the last place I'd look in troubleshooting this problem.

Does this happen with a different Facebook account on the same computer in both browsers?

The problems he's having aren't just with Facebook.

Knowing how that little window was implemented in code may provide a hint at what's not working right. Unfortunately, I can't make out any real details from the page source-I'm really stale with HTML and CSS. The little chat box is called a "pagelet" in the source...

That's not the impression I got. One should always start with the low dangling fruit and not make assumptions.
