I runs trivia night that has a music round. I do ten 20 seconds clips of various songs. Currently I use an iPhone app but the process is tedious. Is there a plug in or something that would allow me to make a clip and load it into iTunes, which then I can load on my phone?

iTunes will do it. I don't know if the process will be any more or less tedious than any other process...

In iTunes, right click (ctrl+click) on the song that you want to make a clip of and select "Get Info"

When that opens, go to the "Options" page and set the start and stop time to include just the segment that you want to play and click "Ok"

After you've done that, then right click and choose "Create MP3 Version" and it will appear in your library with the same song name, which, it would probably be a good idea to rename so that you don't accidentally delete the full length one later.

Don't forget to go back to the original and clear the start and stop time.

If you don't have "Create MP3 Version", but instead have "Create AAC" or something else, then you can go into the iTunes Preferences and set your encoder to MP3. You do this on the General Preferences Pane. Toward the bottom, where it says "When you insert a CD" click the 'Import Settings" button and you can select which encoder you would like to use.

It would probably work with the AAC encoder, so I doubt that's really a necessary step.

I fail at writing succinct instructions, so it probably reads as more troublesome than it actually is. Sorry.

That works, and it re-bounces to whatever format you have set in the conversion preferences.

For the record: Get info is in the file menu (Cmd-I), and "convert selection to whatever" is in the Special menu.

You can also use GarageBand if you want to fade in/out.
You can set up a song file with the fades already in place and just drag the song in from iTunes, send the thing to iTunes, click on the song waveform, hit delete, drag in the next one, send to iTunes, delete, drag in the next one, etc.

Oh, thanks Spheric Harlot! I'm still new to this OS and tend to forget to pay attention to the shortcut notations in the various menus, assuming that I remember the menus at all. Cmd-I is handy to know, as anything that reduces the # of times I have to reach for the mouse.

What does special menu refer to, if you don't mind my asking what is probably a silly question?

The fade in and out is a nice touch, btw.

Thanks guys. I'll check it out later. I totally forgot about Garage Band.

This is pretty easy with QuickTime 7...
Just slide the sliders to the selection you want, Edit > Trim to selection, save as whatever.

Thank you all for an interesting conversation. I have so far used Audacity to select clips, I love its precision and being able to see the waveform so I can pinpoint the exact location of the cut. (I don't yet know whether the other apps mentioned show this also, I'll find out.) And it is free as the other apps. QT sounds really easy, I'll try it next time.
