Remember Canvas, originally made by Deneba for the Mac, now owned by ACDSee? I used it since 1990. It is a technical and general graphics drawing, imaging, and publishing (print and web) application. They released Canvas 12 for Windows and I wonder if anyone has tried it and has any opinions.

I wish they would bring it back to the Mac platform. I think Apple should buy the program and make it part of their iWork suite. What do you think?

Personally I always preferred SuperPaint, but I can agree that Apple needs a basic graphcis program. I would include it with the OS, though, to emphasize that it's basic.

Canvas was pretty cool back in the day. It was highly capable but also definitely not entry level. I was sorry to see it go down hill the way it did.

I think Apple doesn't see much of a need to get into image manipulation software since it's so well covered on the platform by third parties. For entry-level graphics, GraphicConverter is in a class by itself and has no direct competition on the Windows side (which I'm amazed by). And if it's insufficient for a task there's Pixelmator or the 800 pound gorilla, PS.

An ultra low-end paint or drawing app would just be sad like what Microsoft bundles with Windows, and there's no pressing need for Apple to compete in the other sub-segments. That is, unless Apple intends in the future to seriously go after Adobe on its home turf.

Perhaps Canvas would be overkill for iWork, but I would pay for it as a separate app. ACD's development of the program has languished and there is no comparable multi-use application on the Mac platform.

I used it way back, but it was not as good as Freehand and not user-friendly. That said, it was better than any Corel product.
